  • I REALLY wanted to like Raya. I was so into watching it but there is no way I was, or EVER will pay Disney $30 to rent a digital movie. So when it came out on Disney + I watched it. Sadly, I was let down. The VA work was top notch, the animation, character design (yes even Sisu), the world was great. But the characters had no depth, the story itself was bleh. Overall, it was an interesting movie I enjoyed watching once. Glad I didn't pay for it. Want to watch a AWESOME movie about the east, rent or buy Whitesnake, the Legend Begins.

  • I feel like if they styled the dragon in a more spirited away style, it would have blended well into the world of Raya, the poster gave the illusion of this with the blur. Also I feel like they could have make two movies from just this one, the first one could have showed her growing up training and seeing the villages and ending it on the cliffhanger of her father turning into stone. The other would be about her growing up overcoming the difficulty of living on her own and finding the last dragon etc.

  • I saw this movie in class a couple weeks ago and honestly I was a little disappointed. The animation was very good and fluid (and expected to be so) and the world building and societies were fun, but I wasn’t too keen on the main cast. Sisu as a character was just so naïve to the extreme that she almost seemed stupid. Raya I understand a little more because I think the studio wanted the audience to feel angry with how stubborn she is, which is exactly how someone might react if someone else they knew were always wanting to do what they wanted

  • This movie was like moana, think of moana,s home how it was dying as Raya,s home being taking over by that purple stuff, think as Maui as the dragon girl how moana had to look for maui and raya had to look for the dragon and the end of both movies the main enemy became good, the lava monster/girl with karen cut and aren't both movies made by the same creator, I can definitely tell by the art style.

  • This might be another Disney dark age. Maybe the mediocre but serviceable age is apon us and we don’t know it. From 2010-2016 Disney animation studios was on top of their game but ever since they lost the spark. Who agrees with me

  • I actually didn't watch this until it was free to watch on Disney+, because I wanted to see it before I watched this vid. I liked the movie, but I don't think it's great. It was fun action, animation was great. The story was a giant ball of exposition. So much exposition. The dragon design was... kind of boring? It's a dragon, and they made her a unicorn noodle. I didn't really like the dragon's voice actor. Too many weird pop culture references, too many jokes that didn't quite land. And also, her trust message was SO misplaced most times. The trust lesson of this movie was botched to hell and back. There was no reason for Raya to trust her, and it was stupid of her to trust her so quickly in the beginning. I dunno. I liked it because it's pretty and I'm shallow. But there are much better movies out there.

  • About the south eastern Asian thing. I think the issue people might be having (idk whats actually been said outside of this video)... but, it sounds like people are saying it isn't "accurate" but this doesn't take place on earth. It's just supposed to be inspired visually by the cultures of Eastern Asia. The issue could be, that it's so on the nose that this movie feels more like it's supposed to take place on earth X amount of years ago (in an alternate universe of course) that people are judging it... as a direct representation instead of as something that was INSPIRED by..?

    • Anyway, speaking as a Southeast Asian, I didn't feel properly represented. I liked the dragons, but wish they were scaly and spit pearls but at least they did the water divine thing right. They tried with a Malayan culture but it feels too Indian, if you get what I mean. When one tries to represent over 200 million people with at least 10 different cultures, they tend to screw over some stuff.

  • !SPOILER TALK! YEAH REALLY WEIRD HOW THIS GIRL KILLED SISU BUT RAYA IS BLAMED SOMEHOW?? WHAT????? It was way too much characters, too much lore for a movie. And I just never got interested in any other character. The message was so forced it hurt and the movie honestly does more to show that RAYA was right because literally everyone betrayed her trust including the dragon -.- My sister and I were hoping for the enemies to lovers trope but that also didn't happen so, MEHH

But of course people find bad in everything, so if they just decided to stick to a small thing so it wont show that one east asian thing that everyone got mad at it would be good. I have no idea why people hated this movie so much though, but it doesent matter because people have different opinions and such Edit: the last dragon reminds me a lot of inuyasha

  • I agree that there's not that spark that makes you love this movie like others before and certainly i don't think I am gonna rewatch it anytime soon even if I admit I find it a good story and the trust issue was to my liking. That problem you have about killing sisu, namora was about to lower weapon and trust sisu's words and help them, but Raya couldn't trust her and rushed, which provoked her into shooting the crossbow. And this becomes a mayor problem in the trust issue between them because Raya see namora as a traitor while namora expects Raya could retaliate in revenge if she ever lowers her guard. And lastly... about Sisu's design... since she's magical, slender, hairy and apparently she has fur instead of scales, she looks to me like their design for a dragon is quite to similar to make a huge dragon-like my little pony creature

Instead they settled for a little bit of everything and not enough of anything. Of course it was beautiful and I’m glad there was one thing I felt good about. That and the last scene of all the dragons made the child in me pretty happy.

  • Ah I dunno, I just saw it and while I agree it was okay but not great, I think some of the criticisms I've seen (here and elsewhere) aren't really fair. Like, the only reason anyone is comparing it to Avatar/Korra is because both are inspired by Asian cultures - honestly there's very little else between them that makes sense as a basis for comparison. Same goes for comparing the dragon to Elsa or Genie... I mean you'd think we can't have a blue character, or a water (/ice?) character, or a goofy character ever again, or something. Or, I don't know why anyone would criticize it for not "representing Southeast Asian cultures properly" given that it's a *fantasy movie* that just draws inspiration from those cultures. It's not *meant* to represent them accurately in any way :P Unless Southeast Asia has a giant dragon river in the middle, a magic dragon stone, a bunch of giant cats to ride, etc., I think maybe those people need to take a step back and re-evaluate their expectations on how "accurate" it should be. & I actually didn't think it was wrong of nemesis-chick (I, too, am good with names) to say Raya had a part in hurting Sisu, since it was Raya's attack that ultimately made her fire the bow, even if it was accidental. I got the impression that she was really hesitating and might have caved if Raya hadn't done that, so I thought that was the point. That said though, I agree with some of the points in this video - like that it was too much to be packed into a short movie and so it felt kind of rushed and shallow. Some elements were cringey too - like that baby, ugh, that was a bad decision to go with! And the side characters were definitely underdeveloped (except for nemesis-chick and boat-boy, who I felt more invested in). But it had some good points too, like the animation was nice; the soundtrack was really really good, almost too good for the rest of the movie imo; the story was a good idea and had a nice message, even if it fell a bit flat in the execution. I wanted to like it more than I actually did, but it was still okay.

I could keep talking about this for a while but honestly probably not worth it. I really liked the art and design for this movie but if the story was written better and had more depth for characters I would have liked it so much more. the kid and the monkeys were really nice, the olf man too bc he connected with the kid after losing his own. the kid that was cooking was alright as well. main character perfectly fine. Namaari I disliked a lot bc her back story was very rushed and they don't properly show why she actually does stuff aside from her mom forcing her selfish wishes onto her

Anyways, watching the death scene, I don't think she would have actually shot the crossbow. It may have looked as such, because her hand tensed up in fear, Raya saw this, thinking she was about to shoot, lashed out and struck the crossbow, causing the crossbow to be actually shot. I don't think the crossbow would have been shot if Raya didn't lash out like that.

I liked Frozen and Moana (Though I felt the pacing was kinda off too) I even kinda liked Frozen 2 but it was one of my first dates with my boyfriend so it's special to me. But Ralph Wrecks the Internet and modern pixar is a big pass for me. I found myself really disliking it. The movie that I feel I unpopularly despise is Big Hero 6. I felt it was trying to hold this huge narrative mystery but it was predictable to the point where I guessed every plot twist. It felt so emotionally manipulative killing off a character that honestly was the only one I was kinda invested in. I feel like the magic of Disney has been kinda lacking lately. I hope it hits its stride again but considering they butchered my favourite movie with the live action last year I am doubtful lol

  • My main issue with this movie is the villian’s character arc. They keep trying to make the movie about forgiveness and trust, and this chick stabs people in the back at EVERY turn. Even at the very end (spoiler), she tries to abandon everyone’s stone corpses to save herself, until she realizes it’s too late to run. I can tell they tried to make them sympathetic based off the scene framing, but their actual actions were more sus than Zuko in ATLA Edit: yeah, Raya didn’t kill anyone. If anything, her actions were too slow to save Sisu. The other chick got a precise shot to the heart from a decent distance and her finger resting on the trigger. You don’t do that by mistake.

Namari isn't that difficult to pronounce, and it reminds me of Americans/white people being too lazy to attempt pronouncing names that are outside their own culture. Not saying that was your intention, but it rubbed me the wrong way. Apart from that, I agree with your assessment of the movie. It was definitely lacking, and there was a lot of problems with the writing. Needed to be workshopped just a bit more.

  • i kinda agree that the dragons looked a little off from the rest of the film. yes it looks a little funky w the random singular horn and hair, but i don’t entirely think people know that sisu and her kind are based off of nagas. nagas are more thai n southeastern based dragons that, unlike chinese dragons where they represent luck and power, are based off of water and hope. nagas are usually depicted as half human half dragon-like. i know a lot of ppl were underwhelmed when they saw sisu bc they depicted like big scales, scary teeth, large claws. but i feel like the dragons in this movie are meant to be different and not like mushy from mulan (bc he’s chinese based and sisu is more southeastern based)

  • For me I had trouble connecting with the characters since we weren’t given much to base from them in such the short period of time. Another thing that they did was they told the audience instead of showing them. It is kind of a thing in movies to show don’t tell as that helps the audience get more emotionally invested but they didn’t do that in raya. It kind of felt like they were just brushing over everything and expecting the audience to care.

  • I completely agree with you, I loved the action and I ship Raya and the other girl. But we for the lore and dragons. We didn't have enough time to delve into it.

  • Honestly I think Disney relied on the great visuals and soundtracks to make us forget about how crappy the story and message are. Even if I think the movie was really bad, Raya is a great character (except at the end); she's distrustful because 1) she's been betrayed by Namaari and 2) that same betrayal had world wide consequences. This is an awful burden to carry, especially alone. Yet Sisu (and basically the whole movie) urge her to trust people blindly. Even worse, to blindly trust Namaari, who betrays her several times, kills someone and then kinda blames Raya for doing it. Like... wtf. Besides she never apologized for any of the wrong she caused, never proved that she could earn Raya's trust back... Namaari got no redemption arc at all. By the end I was wondering why Raya (or anyone else) would still be interested in making friends with that psychopath. Basically the movie just tells you: "Trust everyone without asking yourself why, even the ones who aren't trustworthy. It will make the world a better place." Anyway, what I want to tell you is: no you don't suck, the movie does.

  • Honestly, I don’t think this guy even saw the movie. He describes it like somebody who heard about it from somebody who heard about it from somebody else. Or he was savagely drunk when he saw it.

  • I’m sorry but this movie just felt like a clone of Avatar The Last Airbender. They saw how successful that series was and tried to make a movie that’s very similar to it.

  • 11:00 Was this bit really necessary? It's a *fantasy* story, set in a *fantasy* world. Sure it takes inspiration from real-life cultures, but that doesn't mean it has to be represented with utmost accuracy, as long as it isn't degrading the culture it takes the inspiration from. Please realize that this sort of rhetoric is actually damaging to the fantasy writing community. Many fantasy writers are uncertain of what cultures to draw inspiration from because of it, and some writers have chosen to not write out of fear of "misrepresenting" a culture, even if it was only a source of inspiration and nothing more. I love your reviews Spark, but I was disappointed to hear this rhetoric, even if it isn't actually part of your review. You don't have to smear extra crap on something just because you don't like something. (For the record, I haven't seen the movie, I have no opinion on it, I just wished you were more... unbiased? in your take on it.)
